The Making of a Sweater!

For those who think I may have deserted my Blogging duties or daily chats, the past two months my fingers have been working overtime.  Having sold 9 Sweaters since mid-November I rushed to make sure everyone received their Order in time for Christmas.  A few for babies due to arrive around Christmas; a few proud grandma’s wanting to keep their little grandchild warm during the cold Winter months; and a few who wanted something special for their own little one.

As each Sweater is Custom made – some with certain specifics from the Buyer, I managed to get them all out in time to make it under someone’s Tree!  As it takes approximately 5-6 days to get each one finished, some days I would work at least 12 hours, some nights well past midnight to get them done in record time.  The first one I made was this little White Sweater with matching Bonnet (Custom made in Pink)!

Just when I thought I could relax and enjoy Christmas – doing most of the cooking with the help of my sons, decorating the Tree, and spending time partying with friends, I sold 3 more Sweater’s!  As of yesterday morning, I finally mailed the last Sweater which was for a Baby Shower in January.

So, while working on one of my last Sweater’s (a Newborn size) – the other Sweater’s ranging in sizes from Newborn to Toddler 3, I thought I would share exactly what goes into the creating of one of my Crocheted Irish Knit Sweater.

Yarn & Crochet Hooks                                           Pattern w lots of rewrites!

First, I need to make sure I have enough yarn, then getting all the right size Crochet Hooks lined up (the sizing depends on the size and various stitches of the Sweater ordered).  As you can see from one of the pages of my much used Pattern – the many notes, rewrites and adjustments I have made over time.

                                                                        Blocking the Sleeves
I always make the Back of the Sweater first, as it is the largest part of the Sweater.  Once finished I block the piece by pinning it to a damp cloth making sure all the edges are of the same measurements.

Blocking Assembled Pieces

Next comes the crocheting of the Left Front and Right Front adding the shoulders. Then blocking those pieces.  I then work on the Sleeves, increasing, then decreasing until they sized to match the rest of the sweater.  This picture shows all the pieces laid out together and blocked before I start the process of joining each piece, creating a Sweater. Once again blocking everything before adding the Neckline and the front plackets (where the buttons and buttonholes go).

Next comes the process of making the matching Hat.  Many request a flower for the Hat if it is for a little girl, for this Sweater the Customer requested a green flower for the Hat; the boys will get a pom-pom on top.

It is now ready to be sent to a new home to adorn the precious baby it was made for.  My little model Cosette is wearing her Sweater with the Green Flower.  I also created the pattern for the Crocheted Afghan to match her little Sweater.

Happy 2017 New Year

753784632_302154

Although it is already January 2 – I wanted to wish everyone a Happy New Year filled with blessings, joy and to my Artisan friends – lots more of “creativity”!

I really have never been one to make New Year’s Resolutions – it just never made sense that people make all these plans for a whole year – when we don’t even know what tomorrow will bring.  I am not saying one should not have goals, but do the best you can without any expectations, and you may just get there.

I like to look towards my creative side and decide what new can I learn this year, and set my goal on that.  Last year I had mentioned in one of my Blogs that I planned on learning a new Jewelry technique.  So much has changed in the way of what people want since I first started designing my work.  So by February I signed up for a Jewelry course in making the “Kumihimo” Bracelets. While sitting in a one-on-one class, I thought it would never happen watching the instructor adding the beads to the Kumihimo Wheel!  Well as soon as I got home; and as with anything, once you try something yourself you it all seems to fall into place.  These are a few items from my 2016 Goals:

My 2017 Goal – is related to my other Shop, MagdaleneKnits. Although I can do basic knitting – even made one of my son’s a 7′ scarf for Christmas- which I don’t think he has taken off yet;  I want to learn so many more varied knitting stitches.  My closest friend whose mother is in a home with a bit of dementia – can still knit the most beautiful pieces. She gave me the incentive to want to learn so much more.

A few of my knitted pieces:

Maybe I will try to get to the gym more – and maybe drink less coke -NOT!  Or maybe I will start that book I have wanting to write for years – my goals are quite simple – expand my “creative horizons”!

Winter Solstice

Winter Solstice

winter-soliiace

Winter Solstice is an astronomical phenomenon which marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year.
The Winter Solstice is a time of reflection, during the darkest and longest night of the year. A time to spend with family and friends. A time to imagine what the coming year will bring.
Take time to enjoy this sacred day in some special way. Light a candle (white, gold, or silver) in mindful mediation.
Winter Solstice blessings.

Rockefeller Center (NYC) Tree Lighting

The Beginning of the Christmas Season

(Tree in front of 30 Rock – skaters below)

The first Christmas Tree lighting at Rockefeller Center was in 1933, when 30 Rockefeller Center opened.  Yes, the same as “30 Rock”!  The first tree was about 20 feet; while this year’s Tree measures 94 feet.  As you can see in some of the pictures, the Tree towers over Manhattan.  Once the lighting takes place, it is officially Christmas in New York City!

As a very young child, my mother worked for Yardley in the Rockefeller Center Building. My sister and I would stand at the large windows overlooking the skating rink and watch Christmas unfolding before our eyes.

Years later when my sister and I both worked in Manhattan, we would rush over to catch the Tree Lighting.  We would meet at the entrance of Rockefeller Center where the large Angels stand with their trumpets ready to announce the beginning of the Holiday Season! (see the picture of Kelly standing in front of the Angels).

As I started my own family, the tradition of joining the crowds continued as we would view the very large Tree erected each year.

Hopefully the pictures will give you the feeling of being right there with us!!!

A Wild Thanksgiving!

Wild Turkey’s; Hartsdale NY – grazing on a neighbors lawn!

As I was picking up my friend Mary who lives about a block from my house, we came across these wild turkeys sitting on a neighbors fence and lawn.  As you can see I walked right up to them; they were so busy looking for their own dinner they didn’t even notice I was right there taking pictures.

I am guessing they did not sign up to be someone’s Thanksgiving Dinner!!!    As you are all enjoying your “Thanksgiving Dinner”  think of these “big” feathered friends enjoying their own day!

Happy Thanksgiving wishes to all!!!

Happy Thanksgiving

2015-12-04-001-2015-11-26-002

I actually received these Pilgrim Candles when I was 6.  When my children were young I started adding the other Thanksgiving mementos for their own collections.  The hand crocheted Tablecloth was made by my great grandmother almost 100 years ago!

The Super Moon

Super Moon

Super Moon, September 13, 2016

On Sunday, my friend and I had a wonderful day visiting our friend in Beacon, New York.  Hidden in the mountains about 1 hour from where I live; Beacon is a small town whose history goes back about at least 400 years.

After lunch we walked along the Hudson River; yes, I took lots of pictures which will be in a later article. After hours of a delightful day with wonderful friends and perfect weather; as dusk approached, my friend and I headed back home.  If anyone knows the mountainous region hidden up the Taconic, you will understand our ride home.  A very narrow highway of two lanes, high up in Dutchess County.  We were about 5 minutes into our ride home along the twists and turns of the Taconic Parkway, when we came face to face to the SUPER MOON.

Being so high up it felt as though we could literally reach out and touch this Moon! I know people had been talking about the Super Moon for days on the news, but until you envision this act of nature, you would never have believed all the hype regarding this Moon.

Super Moon over the NYC Skyline. September 13, 2016

The Super Moon, which I later found out was seen around the World, is the largest Moon in the past 68 years.  The phenomenon of this Moon occurs when it is the closest to Earth. Although astrologers state that this Super Moon “appears” to be 30% brighter and 14% bigger then the monthly Full Moon.  Well, as my friend and I will tell you, being at the high point of the Mountain, this impressive sight was close enough to drive right into.  A perfect way to end the evening of our perfect day.

For those who may have missed this rare astrological sight, your next chance will be December 6, 2052!
