At exactly 8:46 am EST, it will be 23 years since the tragic events of 9/11. I ask that today be a Day of Reflection not just of September 11, 2011 and the many lives lost; but a reflection of how our World as knew it then, has changed into a World of so many lives lost since then fighting for our Freedom.
Β
Let us never forget the over 3,000 lives lost that day. Β Eventually since that time we have lost more lives, those who so devotely rushed to the Trade Center as the 1,000 First Responder’s, many of whom have since lost their own lives.

Last Fall, I visited the World Trade Center as it today. With the “Freedom Tower”, which was built to replace the Towers.Β What made the most impression on me on that day were the “Reflection Pools” surrounded by the names of each person lost that day, as well as the over 700 bones they have yet to identify.

For more Reflections on this “Day of Remembrance” so many vivid memories return as I listen to the tolling bells for each person lost. Β Attached is a link to my previous article (written on Sept 11, 2016). Β Β

Β
Last week I went to the βHeavenly Bodiesβ Exhibit at the Cloisterβs in Upper Manhattan.Β My son, his girlfriend, and I visited this Fashion Exhibit of the βCatholic Imaginationβ on a spur of the moment adventure. Although I have been going to the Cloisterβs since I was very young, this was one of the most exciting exhibits I have experienced.

βHeavenly Bodiesβ features the work of many Designersβ whose work is based on the own interpretations, imaginations, and relationship to Catholicism. Their designs were influenced by their own imagery and symbolism, using as a reference specific garments worn by the Clergy and Religious Orders, hence βFashion and the Catholic Imaginationβ.Β An example is Versaceβs interpretive designs of the various Medieval Religious Orders.

For those who know of the Cloisterβs, which overlooks the Hudson River; much of the architecture used in the construction in the early 1930βs. was from many Gothic and Medieval structures, Paintings, Statues, and Tapestries, many of which are over 800 years old.Β The Cloisterβs features various rooms with antiquities from the Romanesque Period (500-1500 `AD); Gothic Era (1500βs); to the Medieval Period of Art and Structures; all of which are reflected throughout the βHeavenly Bodiesβ Exhibit.
Β

With these images in mind, I will share many of the Designerβs Fashions shown throughout the Monastery, many of which I will compare with the iconic works of art, which are a part of the Cloisters.
One of my favorites, and most popular Exhibit is Alexander McQueenβs Red Velvet gown, entitled βThe Annunciationβ; inspired by the βAnnunciation Triptychβ (1427) which is just to the right of the Gown.
Β
Β
Β
Weddings also played an important part during these Monastic periods. Featured are many of the interpretations by these iconic Designers.
Β

Β

Β
Β
As one enters the Cloisterβs Romanesque rooms, designed using part of a French Benedictine Monastery, including the original Monastic Columns from an 804 AD Benedictine Monastery and Romanesque Cloisterβs.Β All this inspiring Designers from the House of Valentino, using various Black fabrics, Velvet, Silk, based on the Nuns habits worn during this period. One Black Dress & Cape with the Gold Stars is based on the Painting βBlack Madonna of Czechoslovakiaβ.
Β

Β

In the Early Gothic Hall with its 15th Century Stained Glass Windows, Statues, and Paintings of the Madonna and Child, in the center stands the fashion inspiration by the Designer, Gaultier titled βLumiereβ.Β Note the Virgin and Child on the shoulder of this colorful Stained-Glass Dress.

Β
My earliest memories of the Cloistersβ was the large room of Medieval Tapestries.Β Obviously, Alexander McQueen was inspired as I was by the beauty and design of these Tapestries, in his βAngels &Demonsβ Collection.Β His designs reflect the work found in many of the Tapestries hanging on the Walls.
Β
Β
The Gothic Chapel is well known for its original 13th Century 7 Sarcophagusβ (tombs) carved in the likeness of the various Counts, Knights, who fought for the Crusades, and the Baroness of Neubourg. Β The Designer, John Galliano, was inspired with his Design Gown with a Cross resembling the Crosses carried during the Crusades.
Β

Β
The Late Gothic Hall is filled with many Medieval Sculpture and Altar pieces.Β Adorning the entranceway to the Late Gothic Hall is a beautiful Gold Wedding Dress with a Gold Jeweled Crown designed by Dolce & Gabbanna.

Β
While this beautifully, artistic work of the Designers whose work is featured in the βHeavenly Bodiesβ Cloisterβs Exhibit, the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MOMA) also presented many more of these Designs of the βCatholic Imaginationβ of βHeavenly Bodiesβ among the Art at the Museum.Β Many of the fashions explored the designerβs βimaginationβ ofΒ the transcendence from earth to the spiritual.Β One example featured at MOMA is the Designer, Thierry Muglerβs β Madonnaβ with its sparkling pale Blue Dress and Crown at the top of an archway, representing Maryβs Ascension into Heaven.Β

Although many may not understand these fashions in the traditional sense, they illuminate the many ways that oneβs imagination can transcend those of the Catholic Churchβs view into enchanting βHeavenly Bodiesβ.Β What I have shown is just a small example of the many fashions being exhibited at the Cloisterβs and the Museum of Modern Art.Β

The first Christmas Tree lighting at Rockefeller Center was in 1933, when 30 Rockefeller Center opened.Β Yes, the same as β30 Rockβ!Β The first tree was about 20 feet; while this yearβs Tree measures 94 feet.Β As you can see in some of the pictures, the Tree towers over Manhattan.Β Once the lighting takes place, it is officially Christmas in New York City!
Β
As a very young child, my mother worked for Yardley in the Rockefeller Center Building. My sister and I would stand at the large windows overlooking the skating rink and watch Christmas unfolding before our eyes.Β

Years later when my sister and I both worked in Manhattan, we would rush over to catch the Tree Lighting.Β We would meet at the entrance of Rockefeller Center where the large Angels stand with their trumpets ready to announce the beginning of the Holiday Season! (see the picture of Kelly standing in front of the Angels).

As I started my own family, the tradition of joining the crowds continued as we would view the very large Tree erected each year.Β
Β Hopefully the pictures will give you the feeling of being right there with us!!!

There are few places these days where one can find a quiet, relaxing place to be one with Nature.
Right near my house, there is a hidden pathway that runs along the Bronx River Parkway in Hartsdale, NY. One can actually walk from Hartsdale all the way to White Plains, passing under (what I call) the Graffiti Bridge – a small stone underpass, where many have signed their names, or left behind one of their personal works of “street art”!
Hidden in the woods, this quiet place takes one on a walk through every type of tree, occasionally a park bench to relax (for those that need that moment to rest),while enjoying the beautiful colors of Autumn.
I have walked along this path many times over the years with my children (now all grow), but recently for the first time I came across this Waterfall. I don’t know how I ever missed it during my many visits along the way.
I took the first picture while trying to get a close up view of the Waterfall. Having to climb down a small embankment (yes, sliding half way down) to get a better shot.
The second picture is an overview of the Waterfall, which after our recent many hurricane, found many leaves floating in the waters at the top of the Falls.
It truly is a place to enjoy Nature, Autumn, while taking advantage of life’s peaceful reflections!

βImagine all the people living life in peaceβ
βYou may say Iβm a dreamer
But Iβm not the only one
I hope someday youβll join us
And the world will be as oneβ
In Memory of John Lennon 12.8.80
Imagine that it has been 43 years since the World lost John Lennon!
It was like when John Kennedy was killed , or 9/11 β we all remember exactly what we were doing when we first heard the news. Shock, disbelief, grief with so many questions.
Today, December 8th, marks the 43th Anniversary of that tragic evening when John Lennon, returning from a late night of recording, was gunned down in front of his home, The Dakota, with his bloodied glasses and a copy of his just released album Double Fantasy, which he had just signed for βa fanβ, laying next to him. How ironic that all he ever wanted was Peace, as he sang
βGive Peace a Chanceβ; or βImagineβ asking us to βImagine there’s no heaven, no hell below us, above us only sky, Imagine all the people living for todayβ¦β β it was all he ever asked for, only to be destroyed against all that he was asking us to believe in.
Ironically, after a few years of semi-retirement, John decided it was time to return to his iconic music. I remember when I first heard his Album βDouble Fantasyβ which featured the song βStarting Over Againβ! which was released once month before he was shot, my thought he has not lost his true imaginative feelings of how the World should be, and how we need to βstart overβ, living our own lives.
I took an excerpt of this song, with Johnβs desire to βspread his wingsβ.
βIt’s time to spread our wings and fly
Don’t let another day go by, my love
It’ll be just like starting overβ
Finally, ready to βstart over againβ, John Lennon was killed on Dec 8, 1980 in front of the Dakota in Manhattan.
I remember the next morning taking my daughter (who just turned 1) and headed to Strawberry Fields in Central Park, only to be met with thousands of other distraught fans not knowing what to do next!
The beautiful moment, shown at the beginning of this article, was designed in Central Park in memory of John Lennon. It is named after the Beatles’ song “Strawberry Fields Forever”.
**I highly recommend anyone who is a true John Lennon fan, read Philip Normanβs book, βJohn Lennon, The Lifeβ β you will learn the truth behind the man we all looked to for a peaceful world.
